Garden Room Ideas: An office, haven, hobby-room?

It’s Monday morning and the commuter stakes are running again. Some days, life reduces you to the existence of a sardine in a tin or a hamster on a wheel, jostled by people who have been practising their elbow moves, deafened and maddened by those pointless cries of “I’m on the train!”

Perhaps you’ve been dreaming of an alternative way to work, but the sheer effort of coping with the daily grind has meant that you haven’t had the time or energy to look at other options. Someone mentioned that the garden room they were using as an office had changed their life completely, but surely that’s just a glorified shed – how could that be viable?

Garden Room Ideas

It’s past time that you took a look at the log cabins that we offer at Creative Living Cabins for some garden room ideas. Whichever cabin you choose for your garden room, you’ll find it not only a warm and practical haven, with various glazing and insulation options available, but also a stunning addition to your property. Over a dozen different designs have been created to compliment both modern and traditional types of house architecture.

With your office in the garden, you can still separate your home and work life – so much better than having your office paraphernalia spilling over into relaxation time as it tends to do if you work in a spare bedroom or in the dining room. And you can leave the tins to the sardines and the wheels to the rodents forever.

Other Garden Room Ideas?

Now, this is one of the cleverest garden room ideas that we know. Imagine this: home entertainment centre. Whether your idea of home entertainment is munching popcorn with the family whilst watching the latest dungeons and dragons epic, or a mad game of Twister, or hosting a book club over a glass of Prosecco, a garden room is just the job. Make sure you invest in one that’s big enough, though, because when word gets round, you’ll find more than enough friends, family members and neighbours want to join you.

It has been rumoured, however, that other people have rather more energetic garden room ideas. Yes, they use their log cabin for working out. What were you thinking then? The cabins are more than large enough for some basic gym equipment and offer privacy whilst you work on those pecs and abs. No more exercise bikes cluttering up the hall, no need to keep setting up your equipment when you get home – now that sounds ideal. Stay motivated by simply nipping out to your gym in the garden and start right away.

Maybe you just want some space. Some quiet me-time in surroundings that are decorated in your favourite relaxing colours, along with some squashy cushions, heaps of magazines and a box of chocolate biscuits. And some Earl Grey of course – not forgetting the kettle. The Berkshire Log Cabin, with its double doors and side windows will let you view the garden in comfort from your day bed, letting in excellent light for reading, whilst still making you feel secluded and relaxed. Or you might go for the snug Devon Log Cabin, with a smaller storage area attached, containing gardening tools or bikes – or just some more squishy cushions for when the rest of the family join you?

You may, of course, have garden room ideas in mind that are totally practical. A place to store garden tools, do some potting up, sharpen your secateurs and shears. However, with “Gardener’s Question Time” on the radio and some gardening books to read, plus a kettle and a “Head Gardener” mug, it’s just possible that your garden room will become a second home.

Which garden room idea will you choose?

We hope that some of these suggestions have stimulated you to think about the many, many ways to get the best from a garden room or cabin. There are so many more. We know of families who use them as places for the kids or teenagers to flop out; toy storage and play areas – so much fun for the children, especially if you choose a cabin with the right “fairy-tale” look; games rooms for the pool table and dartboard; studios for painting, or composing and practising music. Designers, artists, home modellers and hobbyists – all have found engaging ways to develop their interests through the indoor-outdoor lifestyle offered by a garden room, and it’s a surprisingly cost-effective option too.

Tell us more! What grand plans do you have for your garden room? Perhaps you’ve already started the creative process, planning your space in your imagination. Possibly a bespoke option would suit you best. We can help with our free design and drawing service, so there’s no need to wait any longer to make your plans into reality.

Considerations before Installing a Log Cabin as a Garden Office

Working from Home

Three years ago, the office of national statistics reported that 4.2 million people work from home, the equivalent of 13.9 percent of people in employment in the UK, see figure 1 for regional figures. This is the highest percentage since records began in 1998, and seems to be a trend that is set to continue.

Benefits of working at home include:

  • No stressful commute
  • No commuting costs
  • More time with the family
  • Less distractions if you are working alone
  • A better work life balance

However the home environment often comes with distractions, and for many people finding a private space to dedicate to work is an issue. An ideal solution would be to take your work outside and create a garden office.

Log Cabins – The Popular Choice for a Garden Office

Due to the increase in people choosing to work from home, the popularity of garden office structures and log cabins has increased. Log cabins are a stylish and efficient way to maximise the potential of your outside space. Typically cheaper than extending a property and much faster to construct, a log cabin garden office adds value to a property with much less hassle and provides a perfect solution for your home office needs.

Before embarking on the process of building a log cabin in your garden there are a few things you should consider:

Securing your Garden Office

Log cabins used as a garden office are often situated at the far end of the garden, well away from the main house so they are as private and quiet as possible. Often garden offices are filled with expensive equipment, including computers, phones or industry specific tools. Offices also usually contain important documentation, often financial records. It is important that you consider how to protect these valuable. At Creative Living Cabins we offer a range of door locking mechanisms  but we would recommend an added level of security and privacy for your property and garden office with an electric gate. We often work with Gate-a-mation who offer automatic gates which not only provide a barrier to entry but act as a deterrent and visual block to potential thieves.

Log Cabin Insulation

A large proportion of our lives are unfortunately consumed by work, so it is important that during the working day you are warm and comfortable. When considering your new garden office it is important you think about how the log cabin will be insulated. At Creative Living Cabins we offer cavity wall insulation as standard with all our log cabins, as well as double glazing for all year round warmth and comfort.

Garden Office Site Preparation

As with all garden buildings, preparing the ground is really important before starting work on your garden office. Problems with invasive and tenacious weeds, such as Giant Hogweed and Japanese knotweed are surprisingly common – knotweed removal, in particular, is very difficult to eradicate without the help of Japanese knotweed specialists. Knotweed removal is essential as left untreated it can easily cause significant structural damage to log cabins or any other garden buildings. Luckily, there are recommended japanese knotweed specialist that will get rid of the pest. Don’t let Japanese knotweed ruin your garden and take the time to prepare the groundwork.

It is a fact that log cabins are more susceptible to insect and rodent damage so it’s really important to ensure that your garden office log cabin is sourced from a reputable supplier, such as Creative Living Cabins, with properly treated and sealed wood.

Log Cabin Layout

Working from home can be suitable for a variety of people with very different business needs. It is important to consider how you will be making use of the space available in your garden and what your requirements are of a garden office space. For example a fine artist may require a quiet private outdoor space but with plenty of natural light to provide the right conditions for painting. An architect might require a vast amount of desk space to layout drawings, or a consultant would need space for private working as well as room to meet with clients. Creative Living Cabins offer a free bespoke log cabin design service for you to decide on the exact layout to suit your needs, that is if our extensive range of log cabins doesn’t quite match your specific garden office requirements.
